FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE
Whole Person.
Root Cause.
Focused Visits.Personalized care. More time. Better outcomes.
Learn what to expect from a focused functional medicine visit at HealthWell Family Health, including how appointments work, whether testing may be recommended, and how your care plan is developed.
Every patient is different. Recommendations are based on your symptoms, health history, goals, examination, and clinical findings.
A whole-person visit looks beyond one isolated symptom. Your provider considers how your medical history, nutrition, sleep, stress, medications, lifestyle, family history, environment, and laboratory findings may be connected.
The goal is to identify factors that may be contributing to your concerns and develop a focused, personalized plan rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
A routine visit may focus on a specific symptom, diagnosis, or medication adjustment. A functional medicine consultation generally allows more time to review patterns across multiple areas of your health.
Functional medicine can complement conventional medical care. When appropriate, your plan may include standard medical treatment alongside nutrition, lifestyle, preventive care, laboratory evaluation, supplements, or medication management.
Patients may schedule a consultation to discuss concerns such as persistent fatigue, brain fog, digestive symptoms, weight changes, poor sleep, stress, hormone-related symptoms, thyroid concerns, blood sugar issues, high cholesterol, inflammation, or preventive health goals.
Functional medicine is not a guarantee that every symptom has a single identifiable cause. Your provider will determine which concerns can be appropriately evaluated and whether additional medical care or specialist referral is needed.
Your first visit begins with a detailed conversation about your current concerns, symptom timeline, medical history, family history, medications, supplements, nutrition, sleep, stress, activity level, and health goals.
Your provider may also review previous records or laboratory results, perform an appropriate clinical assessment, and discuss whether additional testing or follow-up is recommended. A personalized care plan is then developed based on the information available.
Not every patient needs new testing. Your provider will first review your symptoms, medical history, previous results, and clinical needs.
When appropriate, testing may evaluate areas such as blood sugar, cholesterol, thyroid function, vitamin or nutrient status, hormones, inflammation markers, metabolic health, or other relevant concerns. Testing is selected individually rather than ordered as the same preset panel for every patient.
Depending on your needs, your plan may include nutrition guidance, sleep support, physical activity recommendations, stress-management strategies, preventive care, laboratory follow-up, medication review, or evidence-informed supplements when clinically appropriate.
Recommendations are tailored to your health history, goals, test results, preferences, and any existing medical conditions.
Not necessarily. Functional medicine can be used alongside primary care and specialist care. Some patients continue seeing their existing providers while receiving additional support for nutrition, lifestyle, prevention, or complex health concerns.
Coordinating care is especially important when you take prescription medications, see multiple specialists, or have an established medical condition.
Medication may be prescribed, continued, adjusted, or reviewed when clinically appropriate and within the provider’s scope of practice. Functional medicine does not automatically mean avoiding conventional treatment.
Your provider will consider potential benefits, risks, interactions, your health history, and other available treatment options before recommending changes.
No. Supplements are not automatically recommended to every patient. They may be considered when there is a specific clinical reason, such as a documented deficiency, targeted treatment goal, or other appropriate indication.
Your provider should also review possible interactions with medications and other supplements before making a recommendation.
Focused functional medicine visits are designed to provide more time than a brief symptom-based appointment. Exact appointment length may vary depending on whether you are scheduling an initial consultation, results review, or follow-up visit.
Please contact HealthWell Family Health for current scheduling options and appointment lengths.
Coverage depends on your insurance plan, the service provided, the diagnosis, and whether specific laboratory tests or treatments are considered covered benefits.
Contact HealthWell Family Health before your appointment for current billing information. You may also wish to confirm benefits directly with your insurance carrier.
Follow-up timing depends on your concerns, treatment plan, laboratory testing, medications, and progress. Some patients may return after test results are available, while others may benefit from periodic visits to review symptoms and adjust their plan.
Your provider will recommend an appropriate schedule based on your individual needs.
